From BC to Brazil and beyond...adventures in international education

Home sweet home!

Today we had a somewhat surreal visit by Uncle Hash & Aunty Maya. Surreal because we had only just seen them on Sunday and at that time Lucas was still in my belly! It was lovely of them to visit us just before they headed back home to Ottawa. It was a fitting visit, and it felt like Lucas' birth had come full circle in celebrations of new beginnings and new adventures. Nana Pola came to visit us one last time in the hospital, and because things were going so well and Kelly (the midwife on call for the week) would be visiting us daily, we were discharged from the hospital and were back at home by 4:30pm, exactly 24 hours since Lucas was born.

Here's Lucas, ready to head home (that's the yellow blanket I came from the hospital in when I was born!): Now, I totally applaud the BC health care system for our delivery and birth. We were very well cared for. The nursing staff was excellent, and the single biggest best decision we've made in Lucas' life so far was to choose the Westside Midwives, formerly BC Women's Midwifery Practice, as our caregivers. Jeanne, Camille and Kelly have been super-supportive during our pregnancy and delivery and have made the whole process completely reassuring and stress-free. So, I really can't complain with but one exception - I must say that hospital food is much worse than airplane food, so we were certainly glad to come home to a house full of good food (including vegetables!). Thank goodness for Tuesday night's shopping spree!

As you can tell from my blog posts, food is very VERY important to me :) Nana Pola made sure we had a good dinner as soon as we were back home.

Our first night back at home we received visits from his Mormor (grandma) Lise and Opa (grandpa) Werner, and Lucas' Aunty Jen, Uncle Jason and cousin Holden. He's also had visits from his Uncle Steve, an unexpected visit from Aunty Val and Uncle York (who hadn't realized we had given birth and just dropped by to say hello on Saturday! - What a surprise to find three of us at home instead of two of us!).

The paparrazi have been insatiable, so Lucas' daddy built him an "official" website: http://members.shaw.ca/mikewinsemann/luke.html.

Lucas
is currently not making any comments to the press, and his media people are releasing photos carefully. Visitors, so far, have commented on how "charming" he is :)

Here is our first official family photo on our first day at home:
